Senior Combustion and Calibration Development Engineer

Location: Milton Keynes, GB

To ensure McLaren Automotive continues to be at the forefront of the Automotive market, we are looking for a Senior Combustion and Calibration Development Engineer to join our Powertrain department based out of Milton Keynes.
Purpose of the Role:
Reporting to the Principal engineer for combustion/calibration responsible for the planning, preparation, execution, analysis and reporting of Powertrain development tests on engine dynos, system rigs or support of vehicle testing when required. The work will require detailed testing and analysis which will provide information to the MAL powertrain and vehicle programmes to enable technical conclusions to be drawn.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct detailed test planning including methodology development and documentation/specification writing.
  • Coordinate with CAE engineer the data exchange for calibration of models, and development of virtual calibration tools
  • Oversee the completion of combustion development at the dyno
  • Oversee the complete base map calibration at the dyno.(charge, torque determination, and DOE)
  • Ensure tests are complete to the required specification in terms of instrumentation requirements, test cycles, stabilization criteria etc to ensure data quality is adequate to support correct technical conclusions for the programme requirement.
  • Support RCA of powertrain issues identified during various rig, dyno and vehicle testing.
  • Report preparation and presentation to support knowledge distribution.
  • Identify and support improvements in testing efficiency to gather information as quickly and cost effectively as possible or to gather data to a higher quality to support high specification powertrain development.
  • Work with testing partners or technical partners to coordinate facilities, resources and equipment to support efficient execution of the testing plan.
  • Develop methods to analyse large quantities of data to produce correlations and useful insight to direct further engineering efforts.
  • Work alongside calibration and vehicle engineers to develop calibrations to achieve best engine performance and durability.
  • Maintain close relationships with other engineers across powertrain and the business in general in order to better understand their requirements, and engage them actively in the testing process.
  • The work will cover mechanical, controls / calibration, reliability and performance development.
  • Support of development of an integrated powertrain (IC engine, hybrid, transmission, cooling etc).

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • BEng/MEng (equivalent qualifications considered).
  • Experience with engine control systems (e.g. Bosch) and knowledge about using data processing software such as MDA, Concerto or Matlab
  • Experience in the combustion development, analysis of pressure traces, and engine instrumentation
  • Experienced in a test, development environment – test set up, instrumentation, logging, fault analysis, data processing and reporting for rig, dyno and/or vehicle.
  • Deep knowledge of combustion engines and thermo dynamic analyses, as well as measuring techniques
  • Ability to analyse engine and powertrain data and draw out fundamental causes and effects.
  • Knowledge of high performance powertrains, associated systems and their testing.
  • Knowledge of state of the art Powertrain analysis tools, techniques and processes.
  • Adopts a creative & thoughtful approach to development and solving engineering problems with good attention to detail.
  • PC literate and at ease with MS Office products.
