Our Team

The Software, Modelling and Decision Science Group is formed of data scientists, software engineers and business analysts who collaborate with our UK concept teams to solve challenges across a wide range of industries. The team comprises high-energy individuals who love solving difficult business problems using a data-led approach. They stem from various disciplines with a quantitative bias working together to recommend well-thought out and practical solutions to our wide spectrum of customers. The team employs modern software tools to deliver scalable solutions that can provide timely insight into system behaviour and provide recommendations on the effect of interventions on the system.

The Role

As a member of the business analytics squad, you will form the front line to understand client needs and convert them into technical solutions. Working closely with the clients, partners, and internal business units, to build the definition of the problem, as well as with technical teams to deliver complex solutions. Combining relevant market and commercial expertise with hands on technical expertise alongside a general view of solutions architecture. In a unique position to drive innovation in line with the strategic goals of MAT/Software & Analytics by bridging the gap between the various technical teams and market facing units.
Tasks will include:

  • Lead concept definition and design of complex solutions for customers in line with MAT technical strategy
  • Develop thorough understanding of customer needs, and explore opportunities, with the benefit of market insight and high level technical knowledge to guide early stages of solution definition
  • Develop, communicate, and refine concept with aid of visualisations and dynamic wireframes
  • Initiate technical phase of projects through data acquisition, manipulation, exploratory statistical analysis and modelling and simulation (prototyping)
  • Support development of qualified product and service architecture scopes (specifications and working parameters for system interoperability) for engineering team to deliver against
  • Understand how to deploy and develop specific product and service road-map in line with business strategy (supported by systems and business process maps)
  • Translate problem statements into functional and technical requirements, and track these throughout the product life-cycle, to ensure project is delivered to high standard and objectives are met
  • Engage with other teams across the engineering matrix to ensure technology gaps, or opportunities to scale, are considered.
  • Feed learning from project back into both market facing business units and technical teams
  • Understand & actively engage with external developments and trends.
  • Communicate status and progress to stakeholders, identify and manage risk, and provide technical estimates for planning purposes
  • Help prioritise and write user stories to manage technical qualification of commercial opportunities

Requirements

  • Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent discipline / highly numerate Applied, Natural or Social Sciences, 2.1 or above
  • Such as: business analytics, decision science, data science, computer science, operational research, economics, econometrics, neuroscience, psychology, mathematics, physics, engineering
  • Demonstrable experience in technical delivery, leading customer engagements
  • Data & statistical analysis (C#, R, Python, MATLAB, Excel)
  • Technical presentation skills (report generation, markdown, visualisation libraries & custom theme build)
  • Experience of database engineering and programming (SQL, packages dplyr/pandas)

Skills and Expertise

Minimum:

  • Ability to draw on many areas of expertise to identify innovative solutions for complex problems
  • Rapid analysis and synthesis of data and information, coupled with strong technical communication skills
  • Able to communicate MAT capability and represent strong McLaren brand, while acting as customer advocate in driving performance
  • Able to engage a broad range of stakeholders at all levels within a matrix organisation, including multi-disciplinary technical/engineering teams
  • Able to build network of contacts in industry and research institutions
  • Able to improve best practice of standards and documentation, facilitate organisational learning and support continuous improvement
  • Exceptional time management and organisational skill, a key focus on concurrent working, and an ability to effectively prioritise tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Flexibility - unsociable hours and travel to be expected

Desirable:

  • Experience working in data related services in healthcare, public transport, automotive or motorsport sectors
  • Experience with database technologies, Big Data, Data Warehousing, Business Intelligence, Data Visualization, and Analytics Platforms.
  • Experience working with diverse technology teams.
  • Ability to support solution & model build (advanced analytics & ML approaches incl. classification, regression, time series prediction)

You will be based at our unique offices in the South Bank area of London. The building boasts spacious offices and meeting rooms, a gaming lounge and stunning views of London. Some travel to the McLaren Technology Centre (Woking, Surrey) will be required.
