McLaren Applied Technologies

McLaren Applied Technologies is a high-performance technology company which combines fresh thinking and innovation to solve crucial challenges and improve people's lives in industries as diverse as health, public transport, automotive and motorsport.

Our team

As a part of our Modelling and Decision Sciences function, you will develop technologies to enhance McLaren's analytics capability and deliver solutions to complex industrial problems. You will support projects and concepts across our key Business Units including Health, Public Transport, Automotive, Motorsport and our Strategic Partnerships.

The Modelling and Decision Sciences has three core capabilities:
• Modelling – to understand the behaviour of complex systems through dynamics or data driven modelling;
• Optimization – to make recommendations about a system and its operation;
• Control -  enacting recommendations through either closed-loop control or human-in-the-loop decision making.

The role

We are looking for an experienced data scientist to lead our capability in statistical machine learning.  Your technical expertise will help us design, develop, test, deploy and present analytical solutions to complex industrial problems. Specifically, you will tackle problems in which:

·        Modelling and quantification of uncertainty is important;

·        Machine learning is used to complement more traditional system modelling approaches (e.g. simulation)

You will also be collaborating with our software engineers to productise our solutions, and identifying opportunities to harvest capability into our core platforms. You will lead on improving quality and processes through team activities such as project estimation, code reviews and retrospectives.

• MSc in mathematics, computer science, statistics, operations research, or other relevant numerate discipline
• Experience in solving complex problems using statistical machine learning techniques, such as Gaussian processes, Bayesian inference, or graphical models.
• Experience developing algorithms and productionising solutions
• Experience in developing and testing algorithms in Python or R.

·        PhD in mathematics, computer science, statistics, operations research, or other relevant numerate discipline.

·        Experience with probabilistic programming packages.

·        Experience with scaling statistical machine learning approaches.

·        Experience in applying machine learning to healthcare applications.

Personal attributes
• A problem solver, using innovative cutting-edge techniques who is passionate about technology
• Someone who actively researches emerging industry trends and open-source technologies, and communicates them to the team.

  • An active mentor to junior members of the team.

The work environment

You will be based at our unique offices in the South Bank area of London. The building boasts spacious offices and meeting rooms, a gaming lounge and stunning views of London. It also hosts weekly events, classes, workshops and happy hours, encouraging the best and brightest to network and discuss the next big idea to hit the tech industry. Some travel to the McLaren Technology Centre (Woking, Surrey) will be required.

McLaren’s Product Innovation Framework

Take the unique opportunity to bring your own ideas to life, whether it’s a software package or a tangible product. If the application for your idea is successful, it will be backed by a significant pledge from the business to fund time and materials costs. Our ambition is that we continue to foster the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship within Applied Technologies.
Recruitment process
• If your application is successful, you will be invited for a phone interview with one of our experienced technical recruiters.
• If our recruiter believes you're suitable for the role, you will then be asked to complete a technical challenge. This will be completed in your own time.
• If you are successful, you’ll then be invited for a phone interview with one of the hiring managers which will include technical questions relating to the job role.
• The final stage involves a face to face interview in London or at the McLaren Technology Centre, with the hiring manager and other members of the team.
