Purpose of the role:

To perform analysis relating to duty cycles, durability targets, durability test definition and durability issues.  Primary focus is on powertrain systems and components, in order to support high performance road car test programmes.

Reporting to the Senior Durability Analysis Engineer, the Powertrain Durability Analysis Engineer will be based at the McLaren testing facility within the Idiada proving ground
Spain, and should expect to travel occasionally overseas, principally to the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) in the UK for technical contact purposes.


Principal accountabilities:

  • Definition, calculation, and periodic revision of durability duty cycles:
  • Vehicle durability tests
  • Function group/system/component focused vehicle tests
  • Component / system duty cycles and load spectra, to define durability specs and for structural design purposes
  • Drive files /duty cycles for component/system dyno/rig testing, in correlation with the real in-vehicle working conditions and the full vehicle fatigue targets.
  • Definition and calculation of durability coefficients to be used to evaluate the fatigue / damage of the powertrain components caused by the main relevant fatigue factors.
  • Calculation of the fatigue accumulated by the components during the durability tests
  • Set-up and execution of vehicle / systems simulations to define and calculate durability duty cycles
  • Customer data analysis (mileage, failures in service, etc.)
  • Periodic revision of the durability test cycles to track any actual deviation from the original plan.
  • Statistical analysis on data acquired during testing
  • Durability analysis based on the data acquired during the durability testing, related to consumable/serviceable items and to the degradation of objective and subjective attributes of the vehicle.
  • Organise and carry out analysis on powertrain systems/components across the projects
  • Interaction with the vehicle Function Groups for durability issues root cause analysis and countermeasures definition/validation


Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • A general knowledge in Automotive systems is required
  • A specific knowledge in Powertrain systems is required
  • Must be able to apply knowledge of statistics, reliability and durability theories
  • Must have excellent analytical skills, with experience in applying a range of data analysis techniques
  • Experience with MATLAB software is required
  • Experience with data analysis software, including nCode, is an advantage
  • Experience with the set-up and running of simulations is required.
  • Familiarity with automotive data acquisition systems and diagnostic tools is an advantage
  • Must be proficient with the use of all common Microsoft Office applications
  • Must have excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal
