Purpose of the role:

As a Body Durability Analysis Engineer, reporting to the Senior Durability Analysis Engineer, you will perform analysis relating to duty cycles, durability targets, durability test definition, durability issues, primarily focused of body systems and components, in order to support high performance road car test programmes. You will be based at our McLaren testing facility within the Idiada proving ground in Spain, where the team are responsible for drawing up the test plans and test specifications for our vehicles. You will work on the testing for the body (includes primarily vibration, but also structural damage and fatigue, noise). As well as the test specifications and test plans, to gather and process the data.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Define, calculate, and provide periodical revision of durability duty cycles; Vehicle durability tests, Component/system duty cycles and load spectra, to define durability specs and for structural design purposes, and Drive files /duty cycles for component/system rig testing, in correlation with the real in-vehicle working conditions and the full vehicle fatigue targets.
  • Define and calculate durability coefficients to be used to evaluate the fatigue/damage of the vehicle components caused by the main relevant fatigue factors.
  • Calculate the fatigue accumulated by the components during the durability tests
  • Set-up and execute vehicle/systems simulations to define and calculate durability duty cycles
  • Customer data analysis (mileage, failures in service, etc.)
  • Periodical revision of the durability test cycles up to the target in function of any actual deviation from the original plan.
  • Statistical analysis on data acquired during testing
  • Durability analysis based on the data acquired during the durability testing, related to the degradation of objective and subjective attributes of the vehicle.
  • Issue analysis on chassis systems/components across the projects
  • Interaction with the vehicle Function Groups for durability issues root cause analysis and countermeasures definition/validation

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • Experience in automotive systems (ideally body, structural, or chassis
  • Must be proficient with the use of all common Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to set up and run tests and simulations
  • Familiarity with industry data acquisition systems, and diagnostic tools
  • Must have excellent analytical skills, with experience in applying a range of data analysis techniques
  • Experience with MATLAB software and N-Code (desirable)
  • Ability to apply knowledge of statistics, reliability and durability theories (desirable)

  • Flexible to occasional travel, principally to the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) in UK for technical contacts purposes or to support data acquisition activities.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Must be well organised and methodical, with an excellent attention to detail
  • Able to work as an effective member of a team, while also confident to work alone
  • Can adapt quickly to become skilled with the use of new software
  • Should have a flexible approach to working hours
  • Must demonstrate a high level of self-motivation, initiative and flexibility, and determination to see a task through to completion
  • Able to remain focused under pressure
